The construction and exploitation of highways in the permafrost zone make great changes in the natural temperature and water modes of permafrost soils. All this is accompanied by activation of negative cryogenic processes, water-logging, formation of mounds of bulking, thawed soil zones and various kinds of subsidence. The article is devoted to actual research aimed at increasing the information content, efficiency and reliability of assessing the state of road soils according to the indications of various remote geophysical methods, in particular, GPR. The investigation results of GPR method possibility for studying the state of pavement soils under conditions of high congestion of the automobile transport network are presented. The Dzerzhinsky Street in the city of Yakutsk was chosen as a key site. Using the GPR data, an engineering-geological section and a distribution map of the anomalous regions were created. As a result, a certain type of permafrost-soil section, reflecting the features of soil massif state (frozen and thawed soils), was estimated. Besides, the heterogeneities of the road base were identified (areas of suffusion processes, presence of waterlogged soils). It is shown that the GPR method has a high informativity for studying negative cryogenic processes and phenomena in the soils of the subgrade of highways.
