Investigation of the effect of fires on soil contamination with petroleum products in the aeration zone using an “electronic nose” on piezoelectric sensors. Due to the threat of terrorist acts, the risks of fires during the transportation and storage of oil and petroleum products have increased. As a result of accidents and even minor leaks over a long period of operation of complexes for the production and storage of fuels and lubricants, underground lenses of petroleum hydrocarbons have formed. It increases the risks of occurrence and development of fires. The purpose of the work is to assess the effect of fires on the changes in the content of petroleum hydrocarbons in the aeration zone above the large-scale lens. Petroleum products in the soils were determined using a universal measuring device (“electronic nose” on piezoelectric sensors). The methods for assessing the content of petroleum hydrocarbons in soils developed by the authors differ from existing ones in high accuracy, sensitivity, cost-effectiveness, expressiveness of analysis, a wide range of detectable concentrations of petroleum products in soils (0–25 of approximately permissible concentration), and the absence of a complex stage of soil sample preparation. The soils were examined in the aeration zone (above the lens) on the territory of a typical oil terminal in the Central Black Earth Economic Region. The approximately permissible concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons in the aeration zone was found to be 80 times higher. After an intense fire, the concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons in the soils above the lens decreased by 10 times, and no petroleum hydrocarbons were found in the soils at the epicenter of the combustion. The reasons for the decrease in the concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons in soils are the intensive evaporation of spilled hydrocarbons from the pores of soils under the influence of high temperatures and the filtration of pollutants to the lens by surfactants during firefighting. Repeated soil studies two months later showed that the evaporation of petroleum hydrocarbons from the surface of the lens continues, but with a lower intensity, which may indicate a decrease in the thickness of the lens. The results of the study can be useful for forecasting environmental risks associated with intense fires at production, transportation, and storage facilities of petroleum products.
