The paper discusses solutions for interactive design of engineering protection of the roads and highways subgrade, which make it possible to implement karst protection measures not in advance on the whole length of dangerous and potentially dangerous sections (with the margin of safety), but during the operation of the structure locally, in a specific place, where, according to monitoring data, are established the signs of karstsuffusion processes activation. For this purpose, it is proposed to use distributed monitoring systems based on fiber-optic sensor cables, that enable to obtain continuous data of measurements along the whole length of the monitored section in automatic mode. As a controlled parameter, local subsidence on the surface of the subgrade soil base is taken as a key sign of the sinkhole preparation, regardless of the karst-suffusion processes mechanism. To determine the possibility of using a distributed monitoring system for early (before the onset of structure unacceptable deformations) detection of the sinkhole preparation in specific geological conditions, a function of time is introduced from the value of local subsidence at the structure soil base at a conditionally constant of the karst massif dissolution rate. Established that early detection is possible if the obtained time value is sufficient for the preparation and implementation of anti-karst measures. To predict the value of subsidence, it is proposed to use the numerical analysis methods. Regarding to the finite element method, some recommendations are given for modeling the design situation and determining the value of subsidence at the subgrade soil base at the different stages of karst-suffusion processes development. For the case when the distributed monitoring system is used as the basis for interactive design of karst protection measures, calculation tools have been developed to determine the optimal parameters of the system (the number of sensor threads and the step between them). An example of implementation of the proposed calculation justification methodology is considered.
